I took July off social media.
It was a last minute decision, with little notice and not properly thought out. Perhaps it was no surprise that I broke my social media fast many times.
My motive was my recent re-read of Digital Minimalism and first time read of Tech Wise Family (highly recommended). Both inspired me to limit my time caught in the endless feed but also embrace more activities away from the screen, with people in-person and providing space to think.
Even though I generally "think with a pencil”, sometimes taking a walk in the nearby woods can bring the mental breakthrough that no amount of intense focus could bring.
And as Christians, silence it's a vital to be able to spend time in prayer and the presence of God.
There's a real art to finding the right balance of time at work, time in study, time with others and time in silence. While this little retreat didn't solve all my issues (it made organizing interviews and finding content for this newsletter was far more complicated), it certainly helped me improve my balance.
Overall, I'm very glad I took this retreat even though I didn't stick to my boundaries. I certainly spent less time online and it highlighted my negative patterns. It's also helped me better identify how I want to proceed with using social media in the future.
You might want to follow the Biblically Connected Twitter account or my personal Twitter account to see how I seek to apply these principles (AND to share great resources you make and find with me).
Passage
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

It's really interesting to see how Mickey combines the iPad with Roam. I'm sure you could take inspiration for other apps like Obsidian and Craft as well.
Obsidian Kanban writing workflow
Mike Schmitz's employs a couple of plugins for his writing workflow in Obsidian. It reminded me of the way I used to manage writing in Notion but hadn't migrated due to obsidian's limitation. Maybe I can now do so.
Craft for PKM - Jesse Janderson
While not biblically connected notes, this article might help inspire the craft users here.
A Visual Digital Garden
I came across this illustrated digital garden built with Obsidian publish. As someone who enjoys drawing badly from time to time, and loves taking sketchnotes, it gave me some creative inspiration.

Good stuff, Chris. I know I’d benefit from a social media retreat but I always seem to find an excuse not to do it. Appreciate this newsletter. Keep up the good work!
